Damon West spent over 9 years in a Texas penitentiary for crimes committed as he battled addiction and dependency. When he was entering prison a wonderful, caring gentleman challenged him by sharing the story of the coffee bean. He said to Damon; “When you find yourself in scalding hot water, which you are in now, you have to think of 3 things; a carrot, an egg and a coffee bean. When you put a carrot in hot water, it becomes soft – you can’t be soft in prison. When you put an egg in hot water, it becomes hard – don’t let prison harden you. When you put a coffee bean in hot water – it makes coffee. Something positive and good, something to share with others. In prison, you need to become a coffee bean. Someone who finds and makes something good out of their predicament -, the hot water they are in.”
This has been a challenging year personally and professionally for Team Metahab. We faced the untimely and tragic death of our friend and colleague, Dr. Jennifer Gonzales Shushereba, only one year out of the Sonoma and Santa Rosa fires we faced the even more disastrous Camp Fires and finally lost several friends and family members. There is no getting away from the sadness and gloom brought forth by these terrible events. As I think about these challenging and troubling life events I am drawn to Damon’s story of the coffee bean and what I have witnessed and heard over and over again in my work with survivors – stories of amazing support and compassion bestowed on those directly and/or secondarily affected by these trials. Survivors shared tearful testimonies revealing the best of humanity. Loving phone calls, cards, displaced families adopted and provided all types of assistances from purchasing household items, places to stay and Christmas gifts for children who endured the loss of everything.
Metahab strives to be like the coffee bean, putting something good into difficult circumstances in an effort to bring forth something positive, something constructive. Recognizing the pain and losses as lives significantly changed, we are steadfast in our support for survivors, their families and friends, sharing specific guidance to help deal with and ultimately grow from major challenges as well as minor struggles and disappointments. We are honored to be of service and want to thank all who have contributed so much to our mission. It is due to your ongoing support and ideas that we have found even more ways to help. We are pleased to announce the release of our podcast series: Sliver of Hope: The Journey. Damon West as well as other amazing survivors and families will share their stories in an effort to understand, support and provide guidance to all who encounter life’s challenges and traumas - to bring a sliver of hope as you encounter your life’s journey.
Team Metahab encourages you to be a coffee bean, finding ways to be positive and serve in times of trouble. We wish all Happy Holidays and Blessings in 2019.
